Send to KindleTweetIt is the time of the month again for the research firm known as the NPD Group to once again determine the health of the game industry for last month which also happens to the first month of 2012. In January 2012 the overall industry isn’t doing quite as well as it was a year ago, down 38 percent in both the hardware and software categories. That said, Microsoft is still pretty happy with the results as the Xbox 360 got its 13th-straight month of leading game console sales. Some details according to the Official Microsoft Blog: · Xbox 360 sold more than 270,000 units in January, maintaining the number-one console spot in the U.S. This marks the thirteenth straight month Xbox 360 was the top-selling console in the U.S.   · Holding a 49 percent share of current-generation console sales, total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in January (hardware, software and accessories) reached $301 million, the most for any console in the U.S. This marks the eleventh consecutive month Xbox 360 has held more than 40 percent of the current-generation console market share.   · During the month of January, Xbox 360 held five of the top 10 U.S. console game titles, including: “Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim,” “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3,” “Battlefield 3,” “NBA 2K12″ and “Just Dance 3.” Read more »

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword – Review

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Send to KindleTweetI got up Sunday morning pretty early to get my hands on a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and it has been one of the most fulfilling days of the year. I purchased the $70 bundle version that included the golden Wii Remote with the standard game and orchestrated soundtrack. The art style reminds me of Wind Waker, and the gameplay is spectacular. Now let’s take a look at the start of the game. The game begins with a short cinematic describing the legend of how Skyloft, Link’s village that floats in the sky, came to be. It describes a great evil that is eventually sealed away by a goddess, and how one “brave youth” will meet his destiny and end the evil once and for all. Link then suddenly awakes and is confronted by a giant bird, called a Loftwing, which delivers a note and flies off. The message is from Zelda, a childhood friend, who is awaiting you at the goddess’ statue. You then set off and get orientated with the controls of the game, and quickly must rescue your Loftwing in order to compete in the Wing Festival. After winning (of course), you and Zelda take a flight around Skyloft, where you are confronted by an ominous tornado which causes Zelda to disappear beneath the clouds. Soon, after receiving the legendary Skyward Sword, you dive down to the Surface, where your adventure begins. You quickly become engaged in battle with some basic enemies, of which you must defeat by slashing your sword in certain directions to catch them off guard. This design shows off the accuracy of the Wii Motion Plus, and makes sword-fights much more realistic than previous games, such as Twilight Princess. As you make your way through the forest, you meet a Kikwi, an adorable, but somewhat stupid, forest dweller that you must help. After fighting off some enemies (and playing hide-and-seek as you chase after the Kikwi), you are told that its clanmates are in danger and that you must find their elder for directions. Your assistant, Fi, a spirit within the Skyward Sword, helps you search for Zelda as you help the Kikwis. After rescuing all the Kikwis, you make your way towards the Forest Temple, where Zelda had supposedly ran off to. As you go in, the camera zooms out and you see the feet of another character, who quickly disappears with a snicker. Even though I’ve only just started the game, I definitely recommend it to anyone who owns a Wii. Though I don’t completely agree with IGN’s rating of 10/10, I would rate Skyward Sword 9.5/10, solely for the fact that I prefer Twilight Princess’ style of art. The main story line isn’t the only portion of the game you must follow, as there are side quests to conquer as well, such as upgrading your tools and catching different species of insects. The use of accurate slashes makes the game more enjoyable by a [...] Read more »

Netflix for Wii will no longer require disc

Send to KindleTweet People who use the Netflix Instant Streaming service on their Wii are in luck! So first of all, your streaming discs won’t work anymore. How do you get your Netflix goodness back? You’re going to need to download the Netflix application from the Wii Shop Channel. You’re also going to need to have one of the $8.99 a month subscriptions or higher. Like before though, you won’t be getting any HD streaming on your Wii. Nintendo has limited the Wii’s output to 480p so that’s what you’ll get when you’re streaming Netflix. However, it is nice to get rid of that clunky disc. Read more »
