Duolingo Introduces a Free Language Learning Program

Send to KindleTweetDuolingo branches out of beta in 7 days (June 19th, 2o12) to its public release. It’s a completely free web-based language learning program. They currently offer online lessons in English, French, German, and Spanish, but are already expanding to other languages such as Italian, Portugese, and Chinese. Duolingo was founded by Swiss developer Severin Hacker. Duolingo is completely free. Instead of having you purchase the product, Duolingo allows you to learn any language, so long as you  occasionally between lessons translate current web pages that are in the language you’re learning to English. They use the best/most common translations of web pages from Duolingo users, and sell them to the webmaster, making them a profit, and allowing you to delve into a new language. It’s pretty good brand strategy on their part. As expected, Duolingo also offers basic training exercises, with lessons such as, but not limited to, Food, Animals, Household Items, Clothing, Jobs, and more. Duolingo is currently in beta, meaning you’re unable to sign up now, but we should be seeing a full release within the next week. [Source] Read more »

Privly Might be the Future of Protecting Your Social Media Data

Send to KindleTweetSocial media is very social, and is incredibly popular today, but a growing problem is online privacy. When you post something on a website like Reddit or Twitter, everyone can see it. Everyone. For this example we’ll use Twitter. Twitter has a number of ways to prevent other people from seeing your content, such as making your account private, but that makes all your content private, not just select posts. Another huge problem is that Twitter still has the content on their servers, so you’re still not safe there. This is where Privly comes in. When you post something to Privly’s servers, it generates a link that only select people can see. Only the people you trust can see the content, and not even Twitter has the data on their servers. The best part? You can delete or edit the data whenever you need to. You’re in total control. The uses of Privly are far beyond protestors and activists though, the possibilities for a project like this are endless. Priv.ly are currently running a Kickstarter project, to expand the priv.ly system. You can also check out the website, priv.ly. Read more »
