Send to KindleTweetToday at 6pm UK time, the next generation of Xbox was announced, the Xbox One. I know what you’re all thinking, “It’s not the Xbox 720?”, and the answer is no, it’s not, it’s called Xbox One and it looks fantastic. Microsoft have really gone all out to bring the very best they can in this new console, let’s list a few of the things that are heading our way later this year. All new hardware aside, there are a lot of new games heading to this next generation. Microsoft has confirmed they will be publishing fifteen new games for the Xbox One, eight of which will be new IPs. Among these new games are Forza Motorsport 5, Quantum Break, and Call Of Duty Ghosts, not including Ea Sports’ additions, a new Fifa, Madden, NFL, and UFC game, but more on those will follow later. During the Xbox One reveal event we were shown exactly what the new console is going to be capable of. Currently gamers can use a range of different media through their Xbox 360, some even at the same time, such as playing Skyrim and listening to music for example. With the Xbox One, you’re able to use an upgraded range of motions to control which media you’re using at any given time. You can be watching Star Trek in full screen mode and then want to play the game, so you use the motion of grabbing either alternate corner of the screen, and minimise it into a box on the menu. From here you can open your game, which might have been paused from a previous session, and carry on with your evening. That ability isn’t restricted to those two mediums either, meaning that the speed of doing what you want, when you want to, is almost instant. In addition to the speedy media switching, you can now operate your television program whilst having a Skype conversation or changing your fantasy basketball team, in the same screen. Smart Glass works as a kind of remote, but what’s more impressive is the use of phones. when you’re doing something on your Xbox One you can be doing something on your phone and get it to show up on screen as well, such as a trailer for a sequel to a film or game. Xbox One has a new operating system that combines the previous Xbox operating system and throws in the best parts of Windows 8, which works because it’s not on a computer with a keyboard I might add. The new operating system is much more powerful, and therefore allows for a wider range of hardware and software to be used with it. Speaking of POWER! The new operating system is much more powerful, and therefore allows for a wider range of hardware and software to be used with it. Speaking of POWER! It’s the new focus of the Xbox One.The console has a sleek design, featuring all manner of technological goodies that kept the Xbox 360 back from being the best console of this generation. A Blu-Ray Drive will be installed in the console, bettering the potential games being developed for it, an upgraded Kinect sensor is also standard, and all this comes with a mighty eight gig of Ram to power it through any amount of use. I love that Microsoft is being so awesome about their console, and using POWER! A lot in their talks is winning me over.

The new Kinect sensor that comes with the console has been re-vamped for the next generation. Obviously there are a range of new gestures to allow you to do much more, but there’s also a host of new voice commands. Using your voice to command your Xbox 360 was as cool as it got for me, but now you can converse with it, using a wider range of language to complete tasks, and it can be set to recognise voices. Presumably there will be recognition available for every Xbox Live account, as they mentioned at the event that the whole family can have their own fun with the Kinect voice recognition commands. Playing games using the Kinect is going to become a whole new concept, no longer do you need to wear things like heart monitors, it’s so powerful it can get it from where you are in the room, POWER!

The latest version of the Xbox Controller was touched upon but not in any major detail, although there was mention of triggers that are programmable by the player. Smart Glass can work with the Xbox One in the same way, and is pretty much designed to use the new Xbox operating system, so there should be some interesting abilities available to those with everything Windows in their home. Overall what I got from the controller and hardware reveal was that Kinect has become an intricate part of the Xbox, just like it was when it first came out, but now even more so. People can walk into a room and go from the television programme to their game in a heartbeat, using flourishes just like those in Minority Report, this is the future, and I like it.

You can’t have an Xbox event and not mention Xbox Live of course. The new Xbox Live is now going to be powered by three hundred thousand servers, that’s more computing power than the entire Earth had when I was born in 1991! POWER! The cloud can now store everything there is to store about you, and is going to be a primary focus for data saving when the new console launches, so get an Xbox Live account now as they’ll be transferring over.

This concludes the epic reveal of the Xbox One. there’s sure to be more details released over the next few weeks, but the end of the event confirmed the full reveal of the console is coming at this year’s E3. Come back to read more about the games being released for the new console, I’ll tell you now they look stunning and should play like a PC hooked up to several hundred servers running paint.

POWER!

Send to KindleTweetToday a new trailer for Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag was released, detailing more gameplay than has ever been revealed before, but what I’m interested in is what it shows about the game. First and foremost is the voice of Edward Kenway himself, the main man players will be investing around thirty hours of their lives in. Ubisoft have clearly put the effort in when sourcing the voice actor for Edward, because he has the exact voice you’d expect from the time period. This is an Englishman who battles with massive ships every day of his life, exchanging cannon fire like words in conversation, consuming enough rum to sink the ship he sails and, above all else, shooting or stabbing most people he meets, all of which this gruff voice setting the scene for the trailer portrays. Secondly we have the opening part of the trailer where Edward discusses his history fighting for the King. At this point an intense battle is raging at sea, telling me that, similarly to how players began Assassin’s Creed 3 in the unexpected shoes of the Templar Haytham Kenway, so too will they begin Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag as Edward Kenway fighting for the king of England. Thirdly, Edward Kenway speaks of working for men of privilege, these could well be the men that he assassinates, having worked for them in the past meaning he has an intimate knowledge of their dealings with others. These men could well hire Edward to plunder the depths for the Spanish gold that was the focus of the pirate era. Towards the end of this age of pirates, around 1718, most of the gold had been found, and pirates were finding they had less of a place in the world because of it. This could be when Edward makes a move to defy the ‘order’ of the new world, something hinted at towards the end of the trailer. Finally, the freedom of the game is expressed at multiple points in the trailer. We see Edward jump off his ship into the sea when there are too many rocks for him to navigate it safely through, showing just how easily players will be able to move from land to ship to sea. The many islands in the trailer reveal the scope for exploration throughout the game, not only near its end as has been the case in all other Assassin’s Creed games. Through this latest trailer we can see all of this, helping us appreciate the effort Ubisoft is making to avoid producing Assassin’s Creed 3.5. The additions to Ezio’s story were welcomed after the huge lead Assassin’s Creed 2, but at a point in time when a whole new generation of consoles is soon to be released, developers need to step up to stand out from the chaff on release day.

Send to KindleTweet Google’s annual I/O developer conference is in full swing in San Francisco this week, but the big highlight so far has been yesterday’s 3.5 hour keynote speech. Here are some of the highlights: Google Plus Updates: Love it or hate it, Google Plus, Google’s social networking platform, is not going anywhere anytime soon, and is getting a pretty significant update to prove it. Google is adding 41 new features to the site in an effort to better compete with social networking juggernaut Facebook. Aside from an overhaul of its overall look, Google’s strategy appears to be to use its superior computing power, sophisticated algorithms, and other innovations that have made Google the leader in search engines in order to topple its chief rivals. A new photo-management tool will pick out the best shots from an assortment of photos. The user simply uploads a batch of photos and Google’s machines will reject the ones that are blurry or don’t have people smiling, and photos featuring close friends or families are scored higher than others and more likely to make the cut. If the photos aren’t quite up to snuff Google’s machines will enhance them, taking away hours of fumbling with photo editing software. Indeed, the editing tools will allegedly remove red eyes, soften skin tones, sharpen colors and adjust contrast, all automatically. An early version of this software is featured in Google’s Picasa photo editing software, so draw your own conclusions about how effective it will be. Another feature will reportedly stitch together a sequence of photos taken on the same group of people in a panoramic scene. The stitching system can be used to create a single picture that pulls the best shots of everyone featured in a series of photos or can produce an animated clip demonstrating the movements made by a single person in a succession of photos taken in front of the same background. Photo storage is also being increased from 5 to 15 gigabytes for a free account. Other Google Plus enhancements include a redesign for the stream of content that moves away from the timeline approach found on Facebook. The site will also automatically add hash tags to identify the main topic being discussed in a post or featured in a photo, and will use those hasthags to bring you relevant content. Music Streaming: All Access, Google’s new $9.99 per month streaming music service was among the other announcements. All Access will blend songs you have already uploaded to your online libraries with millions of other tracks for an experience that is similar to iCloud merged with Spotify and Pandora. The service comes with a 30-day free trial that, if started before June 30, drops the monthly fee to just $8 (nearly $2 less than the leading competitors). The service will allow you to search for songs, albums, or artists directly, or browse 22 different genres. Google will also offer recommendations based on your listening habits and your existing library of songs. [...]

Google’s annual I/O developer conference is in full swing in San Francisco this week, but the big highlight so far has been yesterday’s 3.5 hour keynote speech. Here are some of the highlights:

Google Plus Updates:

Love it or hate it, Google Plus, Google’s social networking platform, is not going anywhere anytime soon, and is getting a pretty significant update to prove it.

Music Streaming:

All Access, Google’s new $9.99 per month streaming music service was among the other announcements. You can also listen to any available song right away or switch to “radio” format that will create a playlist of songs for you. Radio playlists can be adjusted on the fly by deleting or re-ordering upcoming songs. With only a few notable hold outs (we’re looking at you, Taylor Swift), the service has already managed to ink deals with three major recording labels (Vivendi’s Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group Corp.) so there should be no shortage of musical content to choose from.

Maps and Seaarch:

Google’s already much beloved maps apps will get some interesting new features, as well. One is a local restaurant review feature that provides ratings for nearby restaurants at the bottom of a search screen. The app will also integrate with Google Offers (a platform similar to Groupon and LivingSocial). The app is also being optimized to run on tablets.

Google Earth will now be available via web browser. Gone are the days of having to download separate software in order to enjoy the amazing satellite views this service offers. The web based Google Maps also gets a new looking, taking up the entire screen, while names of destinations that used to be on a bar to the left are now embedded on the map itself.

In a handy/scary use of Google’s ability to track your personal data and search habits, it can now reply to questions like “What’s my gate number?” or “my restaurant reservation.” These features are already available in Google Now service, but is now available to anyone using its Chrome browser on traditional computers.

Other Announcements:

There were a slew of other announcements, as well. Among them: a new variant of Samsung’s Galaxy S4 phone that will run a pure version of Android, a number of new developer tools, a program to get Android tablets into schools called Google Play for Education, and enhancements to Google’s online gaming platform for the Android operating system.

Send to KindleTweet Just over a year ago, Apple announced it had reached 25 billion downloads from its App Store. Yesterday, Apple announced that total downloads had doubled, cresting the 50 billion mark. To put that in perspective, Apple’s App Store launched nearly 5 years ago on July 10, 2008. Since that time, the App Store has reached several well publicized milestones: 10 billion downloads in January, 2011, 25 billion a little over a year later, and now 50 billion as of May, 2013. To celebrate, Apple will give away a $10,000 App Store gift card to the lucky person who downloaded the 50 billionth app, with 50 runners up receiving a $500 card. Apple is expected to announce the winners within a few days. Apple previously announced its App Store had topped 40 billion downloads in January, 2013, meaning that fully 1/5 of the total downloads from the App Store have occurred in the first half of 2013 alone. It is quite a testament to Apple’s unique business model and product line that 5 years after launch the App Store continues to experience such meteoric growth. Of course, some critics are already calling the timing suspicious given that the announcement comes in the middle of one of Apple’s chief “frenemies”, Google’s I/O conference, the annual (and typically newsworthy) developer conference held by Google in San Francisco. Apple has gotten quite generous with its most recent slate of prizes. In 2011, when Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, in the United Kingdom unwittingly downloaded the 10 billionth app, she was contacted by Eddy Cue, an Apple Senior Vice President, and given a $10,000 iTunes gift card. The lucky person to download the 25 billionth app back in 2012, on the other hand, was Chunli Fu of Qingdao, China, who was flown to Apple’s Beijing headquarters to receive a $10,000 gift card.
Send to KindleTweet Google Glass may well be the future of connected technology. While people once quipped “who would want to carry a phone with them everywhere they go?” (yes, I am old enough to remember a world before the rise of the cellular phone) most of us could not live without our smartphones today. Some are skeptical of the success of Glass, given its unusual and not entirely fashionable appearance, but all indications are that it will be one of the most wildly popular tech gadgets since the iPhone when it is finally released to the general public early next year. But will Google Glass add to our lives or further strain our human interactions? A recent Saturday Night Live sketch poked fun at early adopters struggling with head motion and verbal input issues, but will the rift created by Glass be even wider? One of my personal pet peeves is going out with someone who spends their time with you text messaging and posting on Facebook? And whether you do it yourself or not, the lure of using various smartphone functions while driving is well known despite the obvious dangers. So how will we react when we have a constant stream of customizable data flowing directly into our field of view? Will conversations that trail off into nowhere become the norm? Will real life, without the augmentation of Glass, become the unthinkable hell that losing a smartphone is today? Only time will tell. For my part, I think the less well thought out side effects of Glass will be the most entertaining. Yes, just like the Internet quickly shifted from its intended purpose as a repository of encyclopedic knowledge and means of sharing information with those in remote locations in its early days to an endless stream of 24 hour pornography and gross consumerism, so too, I predict, will be the fate of Google Glass. Augmented reality ads will soon become the norm everywhere we go, the adult entertainment industry will undoubtedly come up with a plethora of creative uses for the technology, and privacy (already becoming a thing of the past) will slip into utter nonexistence when every moment of your life might be recorded by any number of people throughout the day and every web-accessible detail of your life can be accessed with a nod of the head. As Google Glass (and its inevitable copycat products) evolve to become more subtle and easily concealable, the nefarious uses of the technology will grow as quickly or faster than the legitimate ones.

Google Glass may well be the future of connected technology.

Google Glass will undoubtedly usher in a brave new world of connected technology, but as with every emerging technology, its unintended consequences can be as much a part of its legacy as the intended ones.

Send to KindleTweetFirst-person-shooting (FPS) games have always been a different experience to gamers. It provides, well, a first-person viewpoint of the game, which gives gamers the thrill of being in the game itself. The only thing that you see in the screen is your two hands – whatever those are holding as weapons – and then you fire away against whoever character or player you see inside the map. The kind of gameplay FPS provides is probably the most realistic, in terms of the feel of the game. But what if you add the laws of physics to the equation? Here’s where the upcoming game Fatal Velocity comes in. The nuclear war that arose due to the clash between the United States and the Soviet Union during the mid-1950s consumed the Earth so much that the planet became near-uninhabitable. This damage forced the remnants of the two nations to unite and look for another planet to live in. Fast forward to the new world, and a new society was formed, but without proper governance the human race was in peril. There had to be a way to “feed the crude behavior of the human race,” and a new sport was born – Fatal Velocity. The game involves an arena that challenges the player’s ability to overcome various obstacles, including harsh conditions in the environment as well as other players, or enemies. You get to use equipment that utilizes the existing laws and properties of physics, such as the jetpack to increase your mobility; physics-based weapons such as shotgun, push and pull; and you may also use these weapons to move around the map. There are also some “force modifiers.” Pretty soon we will have additional details, as updates continue to be released. Fatal Velocity is made by the indie game developing team Range+1, whose members all hail from the Art Institute of Vancouver in British Columbia. The team is composed of these young and energetic individuals: R.Jaime Smith (Producer, Lead Level Designer) Tony Ho (Lead Programmer) Eric Hayman (Lead UI Programmer) Maurice Gela (Pipeline Mgr & Particle Effects) Kristyan Queaño (Lead Front End & Level Designer) Ryan Friend (Lead Environment Modeler) Chris Johnson (Lead Character Modeler) Antonio Ghidina (Level Designer) John Finlay (Level Designer) Vassil Anguelov (Lead Animator) Derek James (Animator) Oscar “Scorp” Maciel (Lead Graphic Designer) The game has been released in alpha mode, and you may check out how the game works in this video: Here are a few screenshots of the game:

Send to KindleTweet Creating an Electronic Nose for the Smell of It As I was walking to work on April 1st, I was listening to CNN Radio’s podcast report of Google Nose. Whether they were in on the joke or had been taken in by it, I’m not sure. In any case, it was obvious to most that it was a joke. However, some people bought it, and perhaps more disconcertingly, some actually thought they had it working! Well, most people understood that photons can’t turn into smells, but it is possible to create the database of smells that Google described. Technology company Cyrano Sciences has developed an electronic nose. Yes, Cyrano. The company’s sense of humor didn’t stop with 17th Century sci-fi writers. The prototype of their device was initially named Durante. Their product eventually evolved into the Cyranose 320. Now licensed by the optical system company IOS (hopefully Apple isn’t sniffing out a lawsuit) the device reads a ‘smellprint’ of chemical vapors, records it, and compares it with it’s current database. But unlike Google Nose’s imagined database, The Cyranose won’t be smelling flowers or success. Instead, it can smell patients breath and determine whether or not they have certain diseases like mesothelioma. It can also sniff out the freshness of foods used in restaurants. The potential uses of an electronic nose don’t stop there. One could also be used to smell harmful chemicals used in factories before they reach levels dangerous for workers. Some countries have even considered adding a unique scent to their currency to make it more difficult to forge. Fortunately it’s not yet possible for you to sniff your tablet and smell this article. You might have closed your browser if you caught of whiff of the tuna sandwich I’m having for lunch.

Send to KindleTweet The Cherry Mobile Fusion Bolt The Cheapest Hi-Res Quad-Core Tablet you CAN’T Buy! The verdict is in, the cheapest high-res quad-core tablet around is the 7 inch Cherry Mobile Fusion Bolt. At $99, it’s half the price of the Nexus 7. Unfortunately, it’s only sold in the Philippines. Since it’s not made in China it’s not available in all the usual places. So since this neat little tablet is out of bounds, let’s look at a the cheapest quad-core tablets you can get your hands on. Ainol NOVO7 Crystal First, we’ll look at the rock-bottom priced 7 inch tablet. The Ainol NOVO7 Crystal is unremarkable beyond the CPU and the price. On the downside, there’s only a single front facing 0.3mp camera. There’s no Bluetooth, no GPS, and the battery will only last 6 hours at most. On the plus side, it runs the Actions ATM7029 Cortex-A9 quad-core 1.5GHz. However, some report that it’s actually using a modified and improved A5, rather than an actual A9 CPU. In any case, apps and process that can take advantage of the quad core should run faster. It’s running Android 4.0 and has 8GB of internal memory. There’s obviously WiFi, and you get the big brand feature of 1080p HDMI TV-out. 3D games are supported and some should play well as the device has a 3D accelerator, but don’t expect to play Need for Speed without lag. At $116.99, this tablet comes in less than $20 more than the Bolt. The Bolt does have a rear camera (though only a 2MP one). Both devices use the same processor, except that the Ainol claims it’s runs as 1.5GHz while the Bolt runs at 1.0GHz. The Bolt runs the slightly improved Android 4.1. The better processor on the Ainol might make it worth the extra cash, as the missing features aren’t worth that much. With free shipping, it certainly going to cost you less than a trip to the Philippines. The biggest downside is going to be that the Ainol Novo7 Crystal isn’t actually available yet, and won’t be until April 1st, but you can pre-order it now. Prices may rise once it is released, but right now it’s the cheapest quad-core tablet with a 7 inch screen around. Ramos W27Pro As long as we’re looking at cheap quad-cores, let’s take a look at the cheapest 10 incher as well. The Ramos W27Pro has nearly the same features and processor as the Ainol Novo7. The only upgrade is that it runs Android 4.1 and has twice the internal memory, and the downgrade is that it lack TV-out. Also the battery may run up to 7 hours. But if you want the cheapest quad-core tablet, this one goes for only $158.99 with free shipping. If you’re into intense 3D games, these tablets may not be for you, but if you just want a quick tablet to play around with these are your cheapest choices. On the whole, they’re not bad for [...]

Another good thing about them is that both Ainol and Ramos have a wide following, so you should be able to find support communities online. You’ll be able to root them and maybe even upgrade to the latest versions of Android.

If you have either of these, or the Fusion Bolt, tell us how you like them.

Send to KindleTweet And then, the gamers just went crazy. Just recently, a video teaser showing off 3D animations of four basic shapes that every gamer of every generation will be definitely familiar of – consisting of the triangle, circle, square and the cross mark – in a somewhat high-tech, aqua-fied, and not to mention a revamped look of the colored shapes, has been released by Sony and is continuing to spread all over the web. And not just the awesomely animated shapes – towards the end, the video showed the PS logo of the console that you would pretty much think about when you see those four shapes, and just below it, the date that every gamer of every generation should not miss: February 20, 2013. This might be just it, folks, and by now we are about 99% sure of it. Come February 20, Sony will finally unveil a highly anticipated major upgrade, refurbish, remodel and rebuild (or whatever you would want to call it) of the best-selling console of its generation. Sony will finally release the Sony PlayStation 4. Since its birth in December 1994, the Sony PlayStation has been released in three major iterations – the PlayStation, which was the first video game console that had about 100 million units sold; followed by a basically named Playstation 2, extending its records of over 160 million units sold as of January 2011, and its recent successor, the PlayStation 3, which notched to only over 70.2 million consoles worldwide, but undeniably the best-packaged console among the three versions released. Although it wasn’t really specified on what is to be expected at the aforementioned date, rumors and even statements from major league Sony employees seem to point to the obvious. For instance, one Sony VP mentioned that we “could hear something about a big secret” come June’s E3 trade show. While all speculations continue to build up, Sony’s head honcho Kaz Hirai did give a hint that they may just wait for the competition to bring out their own, the same strategy that they enforced from the previous generation release. As with rumors, here are some speculated specifications for the next PlayStation: - Eight-core AMD64 CPU - AMD R10XX GPU -[rumored] TV service It must be expected though that the wireless technology will be retained (of course) and the very same form of the controller will be intact. Other than the performance improvements, as based from the video teaser released, there may also be some changes on the overall look of the unit. We have all seen the changes of the unit from the first version up to the latest generation. Whatever the changes could be, this might be what just Sony says as “a sight of the future.” What are the other improvements and new features that you think we’ll see from the PlayStation 4? Tell us about it in your comments below.

As with rumors, here are some speculated specifications for the next PlayStation:

- Eight-core AMD64 CPU

- AMD R10XX GPU

-[rumored] TV service

It must be expected though that the wireless technology will be retained (of course) and the very same form of the controller will be intact. Other than the performance improvements, as based from the video teaser released, there may also be some changes on the overall look of the unit. We have all seen the changes of the unit from the first version up to the latest generation.

Whatever the changes could be, this might be what just Sony says as “a sight of the future.”

What are the other improvements and new features that you think we’ll see from the PlayStation 4? Tell us about it in your comments below.

Send to KindleTweetSure, news has now been spreading around cybertown that demands for Apple’s iPhone 5 are falling. This may be true to some point – mainly because some Apple fans are smart enough to wait for the later iteration of Apple’s “insanely great” phone; may also be untrue as there is also this one article discussing about how the iPhone 5 is a “not-so-cool-anymore” smartphone according to teenagers, but we all know this could be just too incredible to believe. But there is one question to ask Apple fans, including myself: Does everyone really want an iPhone 5? If you are like me, as a personal preference I don’t really need to jump from the iPhone 4S to its younger brother. A colleague of mine owns an iPhone 4, but he doesn’t really plan to upgrade either. Maybe if I owned a really old phone – the first iPhone, perhaps? Or even if I had an iPhone 3G. I wouldn’t even tolerate a 3GS, in my humble opinion. But there’s a different story for everyone. Take freelance journalist Peter Falck for a good example. As reported from The Unofficial Apple Weblog, this guy displays one unique kind of loyalty to Apple. He owns an iPhone 3G, which he obtained way back in January 2009. Yes – with an officially a four-year-old smartphone, Falck says he still loves the very same features Jobs boasted off about back in 2009. These days, those kind of phones would have already been damaged. In other cases, not even the newest smartphones are given the proper treatment that they deserve – take some of the craziest experiments done by teenagers on the iPhone 5, as seen on YouTube. There are actually a few advantages to the iPhone 3G, even against today’s standards. Some of these are as follows: The curved plastic back. According to Falck, this ergonomic quality gives off that ease of holding the 3G, as compared to recent improvements in aesthetics of the iPhone 4 up to the 5. The old, smoothly rounded design feels easier and friendlier to the hand. Sure it’s fatter, but fat can be sexy, too. Slow can be good, too. As a writer, Falck says that the slow speed of his phone forces him to write slowly. He also tends to be careful with his choice of words, thanks to this uncanny feature. But this can be a double-edged sword; Falck shares that this also slows down his train of thought, which results to some ideas lost in the process. Web and Media content is still there. While the lack of compatible apps due to updates can be a nuisance to using such an old device, Falck is still happy with the things he can do with his 3G – IP Telephony and eMail. Besides, it can still play videos nicely. Well, I’d give him a good two thumbs up for that. Anyone else sharing the same philosophy as Falck?
