A Free Firmware Update For The Xbox 360 Starts Today

A mandatory firmware update is rolling out for the Xbox 360 starting today. When you sign into Xbox Live you will be prompted to download the update. I just applied the update to my Xbox 360 and the process took at most 4 minutes to download and install the update. My 360 also re-started twice as was expected during the update process.

The update is meant to address color issues that some users were experiencing. The ‘Metro’ dashboard was forcing video content to run at limited range of RGB levels, resulting in washed out colors, with blacks becoming grey.

In this update, we are providing a fix to a color issue that some were experiencing, and it will be immediately notable in the dashboard. The fix is also being applied by partners to their apps on Xbox LIVE, which we expect to roll out over the coming months.
