Multiplatform
Platforms: PC, 360, PS3
Skyrim is the fifth Elder Scrolls game, and the third Elder Scrolls game to be available on consoles. Bethesda’s masterpiece has earned high remarks across the board, and you don’t have to be a huge RPG junkie to play it. With beautiful visuals, a deep storyline, and solid gameplay, Skyrim is definitely a game you should add to your wishlist, if you haven’t gotten it already.
Platforms: PC, 360, PS3
Now, before I get a bunch of “why isn’t Call of Duty on this list, and Battlefield 3 is?!” Well, simply, I believe Battlefield is better. Battlefield has stunning visual and audio effects, and some of the best multiplayer I’ve ever played. It features vehicles, something Call of Duty does not, which adds a lot of spice to the gameplay. I love flying around the large, gorgeous maps in my Frogfoot fighter jet, shooting down enemy helicopters and providing air support to my team. The team-based multiplayer is simply captivating, and I feel I am actually accomplishing something every time I get a kill, or capture a base.
-Assassin’s Creed: Revelations
Platforms: PC, 360, PS3, OnLive
The epic end to the Ezio saga, Revelations has one of the most rewarding stories ever. In Brotherhood, Ubisoft introduced multiplayer to the Assassin’s Creed games, which I have spent entire days playing. You play as Ezio Auditore, and his ancestor, Altair Ibn-La’Ahad, on a quest in Ottoman Istanbul/Constantinople.
Platforms: PC, 360, PS3, OnLive
The Dark Knight returns in this epic sequel to 2009′s “Batman: Arkham Asylum”. This is one of the few superhero videogames that isn’t complete bargain-bin trash. Throw on your cape and take a wild adventure as The Great Detective, with Arkham City’s amazing combat and stealth systems.
Xbox 360
The ending to the Gears of War trilogy is the best one yet. The campaign grabs you by the heart and tears it out, with a very emotional story. The multiplayer is addicting, as I wrench away, spending hours trying to unlock at weapon skin, a title, a new character skin, or even new weapon executions. Horde mode returns with a tower defense-like system, as well as a new mode called “Beast Mode,” in which you play as the Locust. You can mow down entire enemy barriers as the Berserker, possibly one of the funnest things in the game. Chainsawing the Locust has never been more fun.
Forza 4 brings “realism” to a brand new level. With probably the sharpest graphics I’ve ever seen, and gameplay to match, Forza 4 is probably the best driving sim you’ll ever play.
-Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
Go back to the past with this remake of the original Halo 1: Combat Evolved for the original Xbox. Returning are the original maps, as well as some rethought, new maps. It includes gameplay and graphics similar to 2010′s Halo Reach. Better, this new release costs only $39.99 in the US, making it a nice buy for those on a cheap budget.
PS3
-Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
Uncharted 3 breaks the lines between video game and cinematic experience, with the best story of any game I’ve played this year. The 3rd person shooter has a fantastic multiplayer mode, and Nathan Drake has never been so badass. Think of it as a younger version of Indiana Jones, but way more epic.
Infamous 2 brings you back into the shoes of Cole MacGrath, probably the coolest guy to have ever shot lightning from his fingertips. You go to the city of New Marais, an alternate version of New Orleans. You are running from a giant molten man, known simply as “The Beast.” Cole gains new powers this time around, such as the power to control ice and fire. Your decisions impact this game heavily, so what will you be? A saint, or a demon?
Wii
-The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
This is the only Wii game I will ever be waiting in line for at midnight… Hell, this is the only game I’m ever waiting outside for at midnight… Until the next Zelda game, that is. Skyward Sword has visual styles that are a mix of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, the past two console Zelda games. It includes Wii Motion Plus as it’s main controls, making every enemy a unique puzzle. If I wasn’t still holding on to my Wii, I’d buy a brand new one, just for this game.
PC
-Minecraft
Who would’ve thought that an indie game would go on to sell over 4 million copies, before it is even fully released? Minecraft is probably one of the most creative and open games I’ve ever played. Want to build a castle? Go ahead. A castle floating in the sky? Go for it. An underground city, where you and your friends can hide from the monsters that roam the night? Do it! Minecraft is releasing fully soon, so get it while you still can for the price of $20.
