Windows-phone-7

At the moment, Oct 11th is the date to watch as Steve Ballmer takes the stage in London to announce Windows Phone 7 to the world; hopefully, this includes information on the rumored Nov 8th US Launch date that has had everybody buzzing since Monday of this week. While we wait, here are 5 reasons to eagerly expect this launch:

  1. The Phone is Fast
  2. Games Galore
  3. Outlook on the Go
  4. WVGA Screen Resolution – It’s Pretty

The Phone is Fast

With the baseline requirements being 1GHz processor, this places the phones right on part with devices like the Evo 4G. This might not seem like a big deal, but let me explain why it really is. Rewind back to ’08 with the launch of the Dream G1 against iPhone 3G.  It was a nice alternative to the iPhone, but speed was one huge complaint.  It does not matter how pretty something is.  If we humans have to wait, we get frustrated quite easily. To have physically fast hardware is not enough, it has to feel good.  Microsoft made sure through half a million hours of testing to get this part right.  Want a good standard for how a touch OS should feel?  iPhone 4 is definitely the standard right now.  WP7 definitely feels as responsive as iOS does.

Games Galore

Microsoft has been partnering with game designers for 9 years.  It may be new to the iPhone, Android mobile space, but for true gaming, it will not have any problems as 60+ official launch titles are expected. The entire Xbox Live ecosystem is available to game developers.  This brings buddy systems, live play, rankings and a host of other social abilities to all games if they’re desired.  Watch out for some truly innovative social games to appear soon. I understand many OmniTechNews readers might not play games, but I dare you to try one or two free ones at launch.  You might find a good one to play while you’re waiting for your seat at the restaurant.

Outlook on the Go

Anyone remember Windows Mobile 6.0?  When it launched its outlook integration was quite handy.  Managing contacts, emails and calendar events was simple and fully featured.  The problem was, RIM walked in with a better interface, and iPhone simply had a better phone (but lacked the full featured Outlook sync ability). With the new ‘Metro’ interface, we get it all back again.  If you use exchange, booking rooms, flagging and priority emails are now available.  It has been a long time coming to have a good phone with solid Outlook integration.

WVGA Screen Resolution – It’s Pretty

This screen is nothing to scoff at. I know, every picture that you’ve seen so far is absolute garbage and all videos of it don’t make it look like anything special. You will have to trust me on this one until you get your hands on it.  800×480 is nothing to scoff at. HD Video, and high quality pictures are the main features of having such a screen.  Other benefits include being able to see just a little more while web browsing and video games will be that much sharper.

Tying It All Together

We are all excited.  Even though Microsoft is a little late to the game, it feels innovative again and these are just some of the reasons why you should be excited for Steve Ballmer to make his announcement on Oct 11th about the Windows Phone 7.
