iPhone 4: The Definitive Guide

Apple’s next-genereation iPhone is here. It’s not the iPhone 4G. It’s not even the iPhone HD. It’s called the iPhone 4. The hardware is the exact same as what we had originally seen when Gizmodo got their hands on a prototype. This new device is 34% thinner than the 3GS and is the thinnest smartphone ever made. The iPhone 4 has an Apple A4 chip just like the iPad. Because of this, Apple has stated that this new iPhone has 16% better battery life than the 3GS. Here are the new battery life statistics:

Talk over 3G: 7 hours
Browsing over 3G: 6 hours
Browsing over Wi-Fi: 10 hours
Video: 10 hours
Music: 40 hours
Stand-by: 300 hours

As far as the screen goes, the iPhone 4 has a new 960 x 640 display which according to Apple has 4 times the amount of pixels as the current iPhone. The display is 3.5 inches. The camera is still 5-megapixels but it has a bigger sensor, a higher ISO, and most excitingly, an LED flash. On the front of the device, there is another camera for video conferencing that records in standard VGA format. The front-facing camera can be used with a new Apple video-conferencing app as well as 3rd party apps. Another cool feature that the iPhone 4 has is a gyroscope. The gyroscope provides much more accurate motion tracking and when combined with the accelorometer, will provide an amazing gaming experience.

The iPhone 4 will run on iOS4. iOS4 is Apple’s new nickname for the iPhone OS. Of course we learned pretty much everything about that at Apple’s recent event on the subject.

The biggest new feature for the iPhone 4 is video calling. Unfortunately, video calling is only available over WiFi. No 3G. However, Apple says that 3G is not out of the question for the future.

There are a lot of other features that we weren’t able to talk about that are new in the iPhone 4. To learn more about them, visit http://www.apple.com/iphone/. The new iPhone 4 will cost $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB. They will be available for purchase on June 24th.
